Protein hot chocolate is a cozy evening drink that also helps you close a protein gap: 33 grams in a single mug. The trick is to heat the milk and cocoa first, then whisk in the chocolate protein off the heat so it stays smooth.

The no-clump method

Whey protein clumps when it hits boiling liquid. Warm the milk until it steams, take it off the heat for a minute, then whisk or froth the powder in. You get a silky, foamy hot chocolate.

Make it special

  • Peppermint: a drop of peppermint extract.
  • Mexican hot chocolate: a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne.
  • Mocha: add a shot of espresso. Or see our protein coffee.

Because it is warm, mild and easy to sip, many people on GLP-1 medications find this an easy way to get protein in the evening.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk, cocoa, maple syrup and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisking, until steaming but not boiling, about 3 minutes.
  2. Take the pan off the heat and let it sit for 1 minute.
  3. Whisk in the protein powder vigorously for 30 seconds, or use a handheld frother, until smooth and foamy.
  4. Pour into a mug and drink warm.

Notes

  • Boiling milk makes whey protein clump. Keep it just steaming, and add the protein off the heat.
  • A milk frother gives the creamiest, café-style foam.

    Questions people ask

    Can you heat protein powder?

You can warm it, but boiling makes whey clump and turn grainy. Whisk it into milk that is steaming, not boiling.

Can I use water instead of milk?

Yes, but it will be thinner. With water you get about 25 grams of protein and 140 calories.
