These protein donuts are baked, not fried, and taste like a soft cake donut with a crisp chocolate top. Each one has 9 grams of protein and about 160 calories, so a pair with coffee makes a fun weekend breakfast.

Piping makes them pretty

Spooning thick batter into a donut pan leaves lumpy tops. Piping it from a zip-top bag gives a smooth, even ring in about a minute.

Don’t overbake

Small donuts bake fast. Check at 9 minutes: if the tops spring back, they are done. A few extra minutes is the difference between soft and dry.

Glaze ideas

  • Dark chocolate with sprinkles.
  • Greek yogurt glaze with lemon zest.
  • Peanut butter thinned with a little warm milk.
